Position Overview The World Trade Organization (WTO) seeks a director to lead the Development Division, which focuses on securing the benefits of development through trade and supporting least‐developed countries (LDCs), small economies, and gender‐related trade issues.
Oversees the Aid‐for‐Trade work programme and prepares for associated Global Reviews, mobilising partnerships with international organisations, development agencies and private sector. Required Qualifications Advanced university degree in economics, law, trade policy, development, international relations or management (Master's or PhD preferred).
Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a multicultural team of approximately 20 or more staff, fostering a high‐quality results culture. Experience At least fifteen years' experience in trade and development, including senior positions in government, the private sector, or international organisations.
Proven leadership and management experience with multicultural teams is required. Grade: 11 – Director (Research, Teaching, Service). Contract type: Fixed‐term, two years with possibility of extension. Annual salary: CHF201,030.00.
General Functions Advises senior management on trade and development policy and oversees research on development issues for WTO discussion. Leads and supervises Division staff, setting objectives, reviewing performance, and ensuring staff training and development.
Builds relationships with WTO Members and external partners, maintaining neutrality and adherence to rules of conduct. Provides technical and policy support to Chairpersons of relevant committees and working groups, including those on trade and development, LDCs, transfer of technology, and gender.
Contributes to the Division's participation in WTO technical assistance and training programmes, focusing on trade‐development matters. Liaises with external partners to highlight the trade‐development dimension of the Division.
Represents the Directorate General (DG) and the WTO Secretariat at public and academic functions in Geneva and abroad related to trade and development. Performs other tasks assigned by the DG, including participation in Secretariat committees and bodies.
A bachelor's degree combined with extensive professional experience may be considered as an alternative. Expert knowledge of trade and economic development, WTO matters, and global development agenda. High-level communication, oral and written, with expert drafting and publishing skills in English.
Strong ability to establish strategic partnerships and maintain extensive networks with WTO Members and external partners. High political awareness, diplomatic skill, and ethical standards. Ability to work under tight deadlines and in high‐stress environments while maintaining intellectual flexibility and openness to others' views.
